Conquered Mount Kinabalu!!!

Mount Kinabalu - 4095m

The summit known as Low's Peak I can proudly say I have conquered.

My journey began at the Mesilau Nature Resort. This Mesilau Trail starts higher than the other trail, Timpohon but is 2KM longer. The reason is because Mesilau trail goes down then comes back up and intersects the Timpohon trail with approx. 2 more KM to Laban Rata. The Mesilau trail in total is around 8.7KM from Laban Rata, while the Timpohon trail is 6.7KM away. Mesilau is the scenic route so I took my time enjoying the hike and the accompanying breathtaking views. I made it to Laban Rata in a decent 6.5hours.

It's freaking cold. Temperature is on average 8 degrees! I stayed at Gunting Lagadan which is another 5mins hike upwards from Laban Rata. The worst part about Gunting Lagadan is, when I was there, there was no electric!!! So at around 7pm-ish everyone was walking around with headlights on. And damnnnn bathing is hard. The water is freezing cold, no heater. So you have to boil your own bath water. After you get the boiling water there is another problem, NO PAIL! Only one freaking small one in the toilet. So I filled it up, bathe halfway, badan all sabun then the water finish. Shitz! Have to stand there freezing reload the pail.

TO THE SUMMIT

At 230am I started my dark, cold journey to the summit. At first catching my breath was difficult. The unkindly cold winds and the high altitude makes breathing really laboured. But it was amazing to see clearly, in all its glory, the starry night skies. Being above the clouds and away from city lights, staring up into the universe was mesmerizing. Endless stars dotted the black skies, a sight few from the cities will ever see. Hiking on the plain granite rocks almost constantly steeply angled, I look forward to rest stops as I get the chance to lay down and stare at the picture perfect skies. As the tinge of day starts to creep up on the horizon, the winds grew fierce and lashed at my face like icy whips. I can feel my face getting number with each gust of wind. Finally after 3hours that felt like eternity, Low's Peak was in sight! I raced the sun to the peak, and at 550am i stood at the top of the world. the sun majestically rising to greet me. I have done it! Mount Kinabalu - conquered!

This sight shall forever be seared in my mind, looking at the clouds below rolling across the neighboring peaks, the sun bathing all I see in an orange glow, I am like a God looking down upon my kingdom! I am overwhelmed by the sense of achievement, that I am fit enough to reach the peak without any problems. This is truly one of the most treasured moments of my life.

Zorbing @ Titiwangsa along the road right behind the Istana Budaya. Wow! What a experience! There was 2 types of downhill rides, dry one where they just roll you down and another wet one where they add a bit of water inside the ball. I went there on the day it was my bday and they added a few extra perks for me :P My roll down the hill took alot longer to stop and my wet ride was filled with freaking cold water! It wasnt so dizzy actually, it was a lot of fun. Especially that wet one....dang the water splashing around leaving you with barely enough time to breathe, Gushes of cold water slapping you awake. DANGGGG. What a day!

Gunung Irau @ Cameron

Located near Brinchang town in Cameron Highlands, the mossy forest, Gunung Irau. Green carpets of moss dot the entire jungle, the cool, gray mist shrouds it in a veil of mystique. These combined with the soft cushion-like ground makes Irau a fantasy world come to life. But do not be fooled, this is a very difficult hike. When i first stepped on the mountain, i am already amazed. The trek starts with a wooden bridge, giving a false sense of tameness. The view from the bridge was breath taking enough, but when the bridge ends, a new world begins. The simplest way to describe it would be, it was like stepping into the pages of Lord Of The Rings.

As I take a few more steps, I notice one of the problems with Irau, the legendary mud. It wasnt raining but most of the ground is muddy. Very muddy. It will suck your shoe of your foot muddy. So if you want to avoid these mud traps you will have to look for roots that you can step on. I did just that and in the end i had really sore feet balancing on those roots. It took me around 3hours+ to reach baby Irau. The peak they(other hikers) say its around 2 more hours of hiking. Since it was already around 1pm I couldnt continue or risk having to hike after sundown. So i had lunch and started the hike down. Just 20mins into the hike back it started to rain! To be honest it was quite interesting hiking in the rain. Its my first time doing this and it was kinda fun. It felt really like an adventure, trekking through the jungle with rain falling around. Man vs Wild! But of course the rain really made things harder, there were more mud, everything was slippery. It took me a little more than 2hours to get back. I feel if you dont mind the mud, and you just walk right into the mudholes you can make much better time. In fact when i was hiking up i was overtaken by a lady wearing just pink slippers! Of course she was nonchalantly dipping her legs into the mudholes like it was just a spa.

All in all it was a interesting hike, but really challenging. Would I come back? hmm.. i would definitely consider. The Baby Irau peak isnt really motivating me there, just wasnt anything there. No view, just rubbish everywhere. For me its always nicer to have something at the end of the hike that was worth hiking all the way. A great view, waterfall etc. This one doesnt look to me like it has any. But the journey in the jungle itself was definitely worth experiencing.

After the hike, we were suppose to stay at something called the MNS hostel which was rm10 per pax and I've heard very rave reviews about it. Unfortunately we couldnt stay there as there was a huge traffic jam. We ended up turning around and staying at a friend's house at Batu Gajah. Would love to try staying here. They say is freaking super freezing cold at night but there's supposedly a Gunung Cantik to hike nearby. The sungai palas tea cafe was another place i'd love to visit.

Gunung Datuk @ Rembau

Located near rembau town. To get there go on north-south and take the pedas/linggi exit. After the toll turn left, at next traffic light turn right. Go straight on (keep left if there is a branch in the road) till you see the signboard to Taman Rekreasi Gunung Datok. From there it will be small roads straight on about 7km till you see a small sign indicating you should turn left. This will lead you to a plantation i guess. There is a branch in the road, just take left. Soon after you will see the taman.

The hike is pretty steep, took us about 1 and a half hours at moderate speeds. At approximately the midpoint you will reach a checkpoint, sort of a clearing you can rest. From then on the trail is less steep but is abit further than the 1st part. At the top there is another big clearing that if you go on you will see these famous ladders on the rocks.

The ladders are abit scary, its shaky and looks unreliable. But its secure and the view beyond it is worth the hike. Cool breeze and almost 360degrees of breath taking view.

Excellent place! Perfect place for good steak.

This gem hidden within PJ is a butchery that doubles as a simple restaurant serving excellent quality steaks.

No frills, nothing fancy...just walk over to the meat counter, pick a good quality cut of meat and just wait to eat.

Price is absolutely fair and I would definitely, absolutely, really love to comeback again to try the wagyu!

Turns out a wagyu topside(rm27, 270g, pic below) is cheaper than a grass fed premium ribeye(rm44, 250g, pic above).

Not much marbling on this wagyu cut but the taste of beef is still very much richer.

Owhhh and not to forget these absolutely lovely beef wraps. Nice succulent beef oozing with cheese. Heaven.

Bukit Apek @ Cheras

Went here on 5th July, now only post. So lazy.

This place is in Cheras near Persiaran Awana and the entrance to the trail is at the end of Jalan Awana 25. (I think la) There is another trail that does not lead to this waterfall. Also known as Bukit Saga. There is apparently a Gunung Datuk but that is at Seremban somewhere. Dont confuse them.

It was a 1 hour + hike to the falls. It was a nice trek not too hard or too easy. But the waterfall isnt that nice. Very small and quite low.

Broga Hill

We wanted to catch the sunrise so I had to leave my house at 4am :(

Pick the others and headed off to Broga. The drive took around 1 hour +.

It was a rather secluded area after Cheras and Kajang if your coming from KL.

If you approach the main road Jalan Semenyih from the North, take a left after you see a Petronas station. (Look out for signs to Rabbit Fun Land as the trail is right opposite it.) After the left turn, go straight on till you see Rabbit Fun Land. You will pass by Nottingham University on your left. opposite Rabbit Fun Land will be a trail amongst the palm oil plantations. There is where the trek up begins. You can turn in to the trail to park.

It is quite exciting hiking in the wee hours of the morning completely in the dark.

One thing to note about the trail is, when you come to a fork you should take the right trail which is rockier and is heading upwards. We sesat to the left one following some noobs and ended up at a dead end :(

I think the hike averages around 1 hour. There are several peaks at Broga but we stopped at the 1st.

On that road where you pass Nottingham and Rabbit Fun Land, if you go on straight till the end you will see a temple which they say is quite famous "Shi Na Tok" temple. Pretty nice there. One thing you will notice is there are many fruit trees around. Durian, cempedak(nangka? dunno), rambutan, pomelo just growing along the roads.

Now there is another hidden gem at Broga, it is a quaint little lake side restoran serving barbequed fish-in-foils. At the entrance of the temple, turn left into a small road. Go straight on until you reach a bend with a red gate to its left. Turn in there and you will see a nice little kampung feeling lake side restoran. No frills just good ole kampung ambience and good food. Try the extra hot chilli padi fish..syok ohhhhh.

Woohoooooooo adventure in the high trees! SkyTrex in Taman Pertanian Bukit Cahaya (or Taman Botani adi now).

Super syok...after that we even had BBQ there.

Got loads of stuff to do around Bukit Cahaya can go cycling, swimming, four season something and many more I didnt get to try. No time la. But overall it was a wonderful outing.

Philippines - Food Oh Glorious Food!

One of the greatest indulgences when going to another country is none other than the explosion of taste that foreign cuisine brings. When wonderful new flavors fill your mouth, there is just simply no denying , food is man's greatest luxury. For so many cultures and countries in this world, there are even more variations of flavors and cuisines.

Philippines (PH) truly offers alot of amazing food. And here are some that I have tried :

Garlic Rice - Ever present in PH eateries.

Ihaw-ihaw or mix grill platter

What a feast! The bangus or milk fish was very nice and unique. Dont think i've ever seen it before here in Malaysia.

Bulalo - juicy steak!

Sisig - another extremely delicious dish. Made from little pieces of organs and unwanted parts like cheeks or ears.Throw in some crispy pieces of fried pork lard. And you have this wonderful sizzling crispy delight.

I really love how they creatively use fried pork lard in their dishes. Here is another one:

Palabok Fiesta - from Jollibee

Jollibee is the most ubiquitous fast food chain in PH. Its a local chain which also includes ChowKing, GreenWich and Red Ribbon. Easily spotted anywhere in Manila.

This palabok fiesta is this noodles that are sort of like 'tang hoon' with a sauce that i think is prawn based littered with fine fried pork lard. You can taste the pork lard obviously in every inch of the sauce. Completely wonderful.

Balut - the infamous duck fetus!

Geli! Duck fetus that is almost fully formed is cooked while in the egg. Looks really disgusting. Too bad no clear photos here (need to get my own camera so dont have to rely on noobs :P ). It has this sauce when you first crack it open, that tastes pretty good. The rest of it tastes pretty much like a meatier egg.

Dinuguan - food of the vampires! blood stew!

The texture is abit grainy. Taste-wise its nice. And you eat it with small sweet glutinous rice balls. Abit too thick to drink like soup.

Mechado - beef stew

Arguably the best food i had. Strong nice flavor, tomato-ish. With melt in your mouth beef pieces. Excellente!

Seafood - insanely nice!

The seafood market/restaurant concept here is pretty cool. First you go along the stretch of seafood market. Buy the seafood you want. Then walk over to the adjacent restaurants and ask them to cook the seafood for you.

The most incredible thing i saw was this!!!

Giant crab claws! And they sell only the claws!!!! Wah lau..syokkkkkkkkkkk!!!!!

CNY Mission : Meet Heng Tais In Penang

My return to Penang started with a trip to Teluk Tempoyak. Beautiful place for some fresh malay ikan bakar. It's a small food court by the sea that has this simple pier that stretches out into the sea.

And of course also got chance to do some posing.

30 Jan

The next morning I took a long 3 hour hike up to Penang Hill from moongate. Wah damn tiring.But when I finally reached the top, it was worth it. Just enjoying the view, relaxing reading a book while enjoying the cool highland breeze.

Overall it was a nice day. Of course no day is complete without some wonderful food. Koay chiap and some tomyam oh chien.

Today is zhi mui day. Spend whole day with zhi muis go see houses. See Oo Oo house, see show house, see Oo Oo fren house, see tan tan house and see tan tan sister house. Then finally yam cha wif tailou, heah heah n tan tan.

Finally at the end of the day get to meet all heng tais. CNY mission complete!

If you go straight after the turn at the traffic light you will see a Shell station on your right. Turn right at the traffic light and you will see Ahwa Restoran. Its a corner shop.

Hokkien mee at Ahwa restoran Jalan 222. 1 Plate for 2 person RM12 man...kanasai mahal.

But the hokkien mee is really nice. Very flavorful and aromatic. It is abit salty but still acceptable to me. But the best part is the sambal. Fuuh syok. The hokkien mee is nice but when you put the sambal wah lau...superb.

The ee mee normal only lo...nuthin to shout about but i dun mind ordering it. Overall a syok place for hokkien mee, would sure love to come back here again.

Cheap Crab @ Tak Fok Restoran, Aman Puri !!

Drive terus till the end of LDP. Remember to keep left after toll. Go on straight till you cant go straight anymore, turn left at the traffic light.

Then you will see a shell and McD on your left. Go on straight at the next traffic light you will passby a shop house area on your left. Tak Fok restoran is NOT at the 1st shop house area, it is at the next one.

RM18 per kg of crab! Ching!!! So cheap! There is a catch though, for every kg of crab you need to order a side dish :(

But overall it is still cheap. We ordered 4kg of crab, taufu, vege, sotong ,fried rice and mantou came up to around RM192. Pretty good i have to say. 1kg is about 3 mid sized crabs.

The most famous flavor would be the salted egg crabs. Can really taste kow kow the salted eggs. But its RM20 per kg for this one though.

We also ordered kam heong and cheese + butter crab.

Kam heong is normal la. But i really like the cheese + butter crab...syok..but messy la. Dip with the mantou memang sedappp.

Eating Weekly : The Latest Eats of the Week

Last week I was completely bz going makan with my friend who just came back from Kangar. Everyday was just makan only....now all that has left me fat, happy and very very broke. Rakuzen, some sushi place that looks like yakuza hideout in Pyramid, Food Foundry at some sesat ulu place in PJ , Pantai Seafood , William's and Shogun.
Fuuuh..so many places i lazy to write in detail. I'll just give the gist of it.

Rakuzen

Rakuzen is pretty nice. I reserved for 7 ppl and we even got our own private room which is really cool. Then I wondered how do ppl get the attention of the waiter? (Bcuz the room is private with closed doors). Thats when i heard *clap clap*. Ooh...from what I saw the ppl in the other room just clapped twice to get the waiter's attention.
At first i was quite shy to do that. What if i clap like a sohai and nobody layan me? What if i clap loud loud then everyone in the restoran come in the room and whack me? But phew luckily thats the official way. Budget to eat at this place would probably be around RM 50 ++.

Yakuza Black Sushi Restaurant

Next is sushi again because my friend has a craving for sushi. This time its the yakuza hideout in Pyramid. It's a new place ithink the name was Senyu Japanese Restaurant. It's more of a higher class of sushi, not like Sakae or Sushi King.

See...the sushis also have a longer "syok" part. More generous with their "liu" like the salmon above can see panjang panjang wan.

It's a very nice place but the price is around double that of sushi king.

Food Foundry

The third place is Food Foundry located at a secluded part in Petaling. The food is really completely average. I think their most famous is the multi layer cake called Mille Crepe which i did not know so i didn't order. But it's safe to say the place is nothing super keng...i think it's best benefit is it is very secluded and quiet.

Pantai Seafood

Now it's time for seafood!!! CRABS!!! so much CRAB! 2 crabs come about rm35. We had 4 styles (8 crabs).

Butter - Good creamy sauce great with man tou.
Salty egg - fail!
Marmite - syok...my fav. here
Pepper and salt - aiks this one ar..i thought just plain with pepper and salt. Turns out got some batter and tastes more like spicy chilli. But not bad la.

We also had this 2 style vege...very nice. Kai lan top half deep fried then bottom steamed i think. Or isit braise? tak tau la

something liddat la. Then got this drunken heah...fuuuuuuuuuuuiyoh syok. The soup oso dam keng. Very nice ,i like.

And now ladies and gentlemen the greatest f*ckup of the night. This f*cking Scotland clam. I was looking for those long shelled clams (bamboo clams?) that I used to order. But i dunno the name. So i tunjuk the waiter i want long shell want. Come out this kanasai one. I thought should be ok one mana tau 7 pieces f*cking RM120!!!! Cilaka...almost same price as 8 crabs leh. Wah lau eh
... kek sim ar kek sim!! It is nice but really don't think worth RM120 lo. Haihhh SHIT!

William's Italian Mamak

Nextup is the usual fav. William's mamak. This time we tried Sotong Bang Bang, Triple H sandwich and the pizza.

Sotong Bang Bang - not to my liking. Its in kind off a chilli tomato sauce with seafood and sotong. I was expecting the sotong to be stuffed with cheese ker or sumting. But nothing...so fail la for me.

Triple H sandwich - basically just some bread with meat then pattaya it.

The pizza - fuuwah...the topping overflowing like giler. Need spoon to scoop the pizza up..all the liu dropping here and there.Syok.

They also hav indomee bacon and cordon bleu salmon.

Shogun

Our final stop is Shogun buffet at Pyramid. The thing about buffet is, ppl feel like they need to eat back enough to cover cost.
So thats abit not so stylo. Food should be enjoyed not forced down your mouth to make shit out ur ass. So for me buffet's lackthat kind of elegance and class. Well then you ask, why not just enjoy it slowly la. Buffets you actually pay alot. So there will always be this feeling that I need to eat my money's worth. So i think buffet's are really not my style.

But anyway Shogun had a pretty extensive selection. These are the 2 plates that i took. The sashimi surprisingly not nice. I thought sashimi is just a piece of meat...all taste same one. I was wrong. This one does taste like sashimi but...its probably the freshness, but i think its also a large part because of the way it was cut. The cuts of meat were not..hmm how do you describe it?
Just not comfortably bite size. (Suang kou?) The price was RM55++. But to be honest i'd take any decent sushi restaurants over buffet here anytime.

Luna Bar @ near Jalan P Ramlee

This place is located in Menara PanGlobal near KLCC. To park right infront costs RM10. Yikes. Thats where the "jockeys" are.
Theres a special secret way to go up to Luna Bar .
1st you hafto take a lift to 20 sumting floor. Then hafto go dunno where to change lift. Then naik to 30 sumting then hafto take tangga up. Fuuh dam complex. But can ask the guard for directions.

But Wow the ambiance in this place is superb. Its located on the roof of PanGlobal, with a breathtaking view of the KL city lights. And its quiet and secluded just the perfect place to just hang out and chat. Or maksiat.

I went with my dear Oo Oo and Heah Heah. And they make me finish this GIANT cup of dunno wat name drink with vodka. Ah yes its called the "Frozen Space Cookie" (RM29). Make me mabuk only. But my drink much nicer than theirs. :D

Jeng jeng jeng!!! What special style of bah kut teh is this?
I have only seen bah kut teh like this once in Sandakan.
All the different types of dishes are separated. This way each bowl of soup absorbs the character of the content.

But the taste is just OK la. Different style abit lo. But i think abit mahal oso here.
Forgot how much but abit more than normal.

Loong Foong Roast Duck @ Tmn Mayang

Loong Foong Seafood

*Yea its Loong Foong seafood restaurant but its famous for the duck.

This roast duck really sedap oh. The skin is really nice and when you put it in your mouth the flavor melts perfectly with the meat. 3 of us could finish an entire duck! but wah after tat can really feel heartattack coming.

Anyway highly recommended. Would sure like to have this again next time

Damansara Village Steamboat

Chiu Kap LIVE PRAWNS Steamboat!!!

A friend brought me to this seafood steamboat place that serves super LIVE seafood. Din expect really super LIVE wan the prawns. Can see at about 1:00 into the video the prawns twitching in the hot water. Kesian. When the prawns just came lagi twitchy, this was after about half an hour.

Best thing is, its also halal. Can bring my malay friends.

Japanese Escargots @ SS2 Wai Sek Kai

Escargots at a hawker stall? Boleh makan o not wan?

This stall is located at SS2 wai sek kai and it sells all kinds of seafood. So when i saw these escargots crawling around in the aquarium I had to try it.

The Na Yau sauce was very nice, kinda like a milder sweeter version of the western style escargot sauce. The escargot meat was just OK, kinda tough but not bad.
Definitely a very interesting meal.

Kanching Falls @ 05 July 2008

Kanching is located just after Templer's Park.
It boasts 6 or 7 levels of waterfalls.
To get there just head towards Templer's, don't take the U-turn to Templer's. Go straight on until the next U-turn at a traffic light. The turn to Kanching falls will be on your left.

After a short hike,we stopped to swim at level 4. We could have gone on but there was some joker in our group we have to wait for.

I explored abit and found the 5th level falls just abit further from the 4th. This is a majestic fall. It was huge, just long and sprawling. It was at a i guess 35 degree angle all the way up.
The sad thing was got some blardy Indian jokers there bathing in oil. Yuck..geli.

Man i love waterfalls, it's just so relaxing. Its just so sad to see there are many uneducated ppl in Malaysia that continue to litter and spoil this wonderful gift of nature. So far all the falls i've been to theres always shit at the bottom. Garbage of the thrash of society. Sigh...

Salmon with Creamy Fettucine

Salmon is such a wonderful fish, its pretty much the beef steak of fishes. Just like steak it doesnt need to be thoroughly cooked. Hell it can even be eaten raw. But what i've learnt here is

1. Always pat dry before marinating

The creamy fettucine here is a variation of the carbonara i did the previous week.
Here what i used is butter, loads of garlic, cheese and mushroom.

4. Al dente pasta is freaking hard to achieve.

Cheesy Garlic Bread

Now this one turned out really good.
I got the recipe from HERE
What I did was first, sweat some garlic and olive oil in a pan.
Then pour it over a block of butter.
Then i applied this garlic butter on the bread, add freshly grated cheese...and Ching!

Wonderful garlic bread with oozing oodles of cheese. Mamamia!

Alcohol Tolerance Training

Well I've always had horrible tolerance for alcohol. So to start my special alcohol tolerance training, I got this Pelican fruity alcoholic drink.

It tastes really nice. But i still got super red after drinking it. :(
It's 5% only man. Sigh...memalukan

But this is a really good drink to get girls drunk with :P
It doesnt taste strongly alcoholic just fruity.

Barbeque @ Milennium Square

I had a wonderful BBQ last week at colleague's condo.
And what's great about this BBQ is that i get to plan it :D

So you know this aint no normal BBQ party.
So far, the BBQs I've been to only has the normal chicken and sausages.

But ladies and gent, this one is different.
First we have steak, beautifully marinated by me. And we have kebabs. And we have Portobello mushrooms. And we even have an insane salad with about a thousand ingredients. Oh and big tilapia fishs cooked to perfection by my friend. Nicee..
mmmm....syok!

A few things i've learned in this BBQ ,

1. My marinade is simple and is meant for high quality steak meat. BBQ steak should be cheaper with stronger marinades.

2. Cream cheese aint that nice.

3. Mushrooms are really juicy.

4. Kebab is really popular at BBQs. Everyone loves to make their own kebab. But of course the best kebab like in the pic below can only have been made by one man. Mua. :D

After the bbq we went to colleagues condo for some karaoke.
What a wonderful night....too bad forget to take more photos :(

Yey..finally a successful carbonara!

The one most important thing i've learned is, never use those ready grated powder cheese.
I grated my own high quality cheese and jeng jeng jeng!

A nice tasty carbonara.

There is one extra special ingredient courtesy of my colleague, add mushroom cream (the campbell wan).

Now that i know why my previous creations have failed (blardy cheap powdered cheese), god knows how many more cheesy dishes i will be making.

Jeng jeng jeng....escargots! I went to this place after recommendations by Ho Jiak on 8tv. The sauce is really nice but it would have been better if it was thicker. And the meat is abit small.

I also had the stir fry mushroom spaghetti which is abit oily but it tastes nice.
All in all its an OK place but nothing to shout about.

Single , double and triple Quarter Pounders...Nastyyy

Wendy's is a famous burger fast food chain in the US.
And is now here in Pyramid. The 1st burger that caught my eye was the triple Quarter Pounder.

Just look at that...mmm that generous amount of meat and that oozing cheese. It tastes nice..though I'd still say Carl's Junior is better this one is still good.
I think there is more meat here than at Carl's.
I don't like the baked potato though.

All in all i would say i love it. This is a nice burger with satisfying amounts of MEAT! Oh and the meat is pretty juicy too, I like.

All I can say is WOW!

This place is really dahsyat.
I heard alot about it and this is my first time here. But rest assured this will not be my last.

Friends have mentioned the generous servings offered here, and boy I sure wasn't disappointed.
I ordered the spaghetti meatball and WTF! The plate was HUGEEEEEEEE! Accompanied with 5 equally HUGEEEEEEEEE meatballs. Wah lau eh...syok!

I've wanted to taste this koak kak for a long time. It's located at lorong Macalister off Jalan Burma. When i finally got the chance, i feel maybe i've put too much expectations.

It was ok la..nice la. I think the Batu Lanchang want is nicer though.

Chee Cheong Fun is also famous but i dun like chee cheong fun wan so no comment.

One of 5 hokkien clans around Penang. The story mentions that this clanhouse was even more magnificent when it was 1st built. It says that the first original clan house was mysteriously burnt down on CNY eve. The clan members believed that the clan house was too majestic and extravagant that it has angered the gods. Thus they rebuilt it with less splendour than before.

People of ancient times use this hand shape stick as a remote.

To get to Bukit Genting you need to take a turn located somewhere between Teluk Kumbar and Balik Pulau. The signboard is very clear.But you better have a car with enough power to pull you up this insanely steep slopes.

Balik Pulau Siam Laksa

I started out in the late afternoon, 1st destination, Balik Pulau Siam Laksa.
It did not disappoint. This lemak version of asam laksa is a nice and refreshing change from the usual asam kind.

Elusive Balik Pulau Pao

This famous pao is hard to find. It is sold on a truck that travels along a road in balik pulau. SO i had to ask around town before i could find this guy.

The paos are well...not as nice as i thought it would be. Seeing as how difficult it is to look for it, i had high expectations. But..turns out so-so only ler.

The trip to this waterfall was a disappointing one. The waterfall has all dried up, whether this is permanent or seasonal i do not know.

But bcuz of the disappointing waterfall, I decided to explore Teluk Kumbar. So i ended up here at Salwa Mee Udang. And the view was spectacular. With a backdrop of a quaint fishing village and a long long pier the environment is amazing.

The food on the other hand...wtf. RM12 for a plate of mee udang wif about 5 big big prawns.

But the prawns taste like they keep it in the toilet bowl and feed it shit. Come bring ppl u hate here. Its almost like making them eat shit.

Hai Boey Seafood

Dinner was at a place with an equally nice view near Gertak Sanggol.The food was delicious.
Lai liu ha kung pow style..the ha is not overpowered by the sauce. You can still taste that fresh lai liu ha flavor.

The Tung Por Yok is my first time eating this and it was great. It comes with mantous that you dip in the sauce and eat with the meat.

The steamfish is their signature dish, cooked in claypot. Its good that it doesnt have that fishy soily taste.

The crab was also pretty special, butter thai flavor. 1st time trying oso. Tis place is definitely very nice, nice view and has a very nice unique menu. Not so typical and boring.

Day 1 started with a simple lunch at Sri Weld Foodcourt. This foodcourt is most famous for 2 items : The beef koay teow and the nasi lemak.

I've reviewed this beef koay teow before when i visited the branch infront of the Bomba. This one felt to me less tasty as the 1st. If i wanted beef koay teow i think i'd rather go back there.

As for the nasi lemak....it was excellent. For just RM1.20 i got this delicious spicy nasi lemak. Definitely worth every cent.

1.2nd Hand Books @ ChowRhasta Market Chowrhasta bazaar 2nd hand book store. Burn RM60 here for 3 books. Hopefully I'll find the time to read them.

2.Cendol @ Lebuh Keng Kwee Cendol, no comment..im not a big fan of cendol.

3.Kek Seng @ Penang Road Kek seng ice cream....mmmmm...sedap. Kek Seng is most famous for its homemade ice creams, especially the durian ice cream. Its not in season now so...not available. *sigh* Makan jagung wan only.

4. Chocolate Boutique @ Lebuh Leith Wandering around aimlessly not knowing wat to do. I ended up here..at the Chocolate boutique at Lebuh Leith. Not a good idea...i used up rm200+ on chocolates!!! Nooooooooo!!!
Not good for a man unemployed for half a month.

It's hard to resist the temptation as a friendly guide takes me to room after room of chocolates. Letting me sample each and every one. Got creamy la..fruity la..durian la...CHILLI oso got?! kanasai. How to dun buy?

Dinner was the most pleasant surprise I had this whole day. Under the advice of my beautiful jiejie, I went to eat at this shop in Air Itam. It's beside the Nissan show room along Jalan Air Itam. I forget the name but it's NOT Bee Hooi.

I ordered the fish beehoon like Jiejie recommended. It was Superb!! the soup rich with fish flavor, the deep fried fish cutlets fresh and juicy. Very nice. I like. But then..suddenly sumting caught my eye. Holy Crap!!! HEAH CHIEN!!! HEAHHHH CHIENNNN!!!!!!!!

Since I'm mostly concerned only with the food in Penang, i never really toured Penang. So, I took this chance to visit Kek Lok Si. This is my very 1st time here during CNY. I did not know it looked so beautiful during CNY nights. Wow.

A Simple Bliss

This day would have been like any other day. But the outcome of your day is determined by the company you keep. And because of that, today felt special for me. It is not often that i get a day like this. It was not as if something happened, but it was enough for me that we got to spend the day together alone. Oh what a simple man I am, a simple bliss from a simple act. We had lunch, we had dinner and we just walked around.

Well the day ended with this wonderful dinner at L.J. Cafe in Prangin Mall. What I had is the Sirloin steak and French onion soup. Steak is OK la..biasa la. Soup syok lo.

The broccoli soup( eeew! ) no comment. Teriyaki Chicken, well i dun like sweet meat.

But aaah.....what a wonderful day :))

Fried Beehoon/Cintan Mee @ Sg. Pinang

This place was mentioned in a forwarded email so I decided to try it out. This was definitely a great recommendation.

The mee is just ok lo. But kasi tambah the sambal and the wonderful fried prawns and fish, fuuuh sedapppp. Just like the email said, the fish and prawns were fried when you order. The freshly fried prawns and fish were still hot and juicy. It costs RM5 but it sure as hell is definitely worth it. If im not mistaken this place is also famous for its herbal duck mee and curry mee. Parking spaces are a plenty. This is definitely a very nice place for a simple delicious lunch.

Baked cheese rice @ Max Gourmet

We were looking for something not too expensive in QueensBay. Nothing much inside so we walked outside and found this restaurant, Max Gourmet. Just outside QB main entrance, same row as SenQ.

A set of herbal ginseng and curry fish cutlet baked cheese rice is about RM10.
The ginseng is really herbal-ish and horrible which i assume means its healthy.
The cheese rice was nice. Curry, bell peppers and onions make a pretty good mix with baked cheese rice.

Overall, it's an ok place.

Mmm...beef. Wonderful beef. Penang, heaven of food, is not known for many beefy dishes. One that i know of is this beef koay teow soup.

Woah..really syok. Nice beef soup, a little sweet, but otherwise just wonderful. Not as thick as beef stew, but not too light that u cant taste the beefy-ness. Alot like koay chiap but with beef.
Many weird organs as well.

Tak tau apa bulu ni. Wrinkled wan. Ketiak ar?

Strong beef flavor like oxtail. Tendons mebee?

Some kinda soft horrible tasting thingie.

The beef balls were also quite nice. Overall it was a really nice meal. One big bowl costs RM8 (fuuh), small one is RM7. But since its my first time eating beef koay teow soup, dun know if this is very good or just ok. But i like it..so i give it

Finally, after so long wanting to taste Dragon-i siu long pao. jeng jeng jeng....

But shit..my photo taking skills not good la. Anyways...the dumplings were wonderful. Just dump a piece into your mouth and wah.....heaven. At the first bite, the soup flows out and fills your mouth. The taste is just wonderful.

Mapo Tofu

A classic SzeChuan dish. Szechuan cuisine is known for its numbing spiciness. The one here is probably very much toned down to appeal to the masses.

Nevertheless, the mapo tofu here is really nice. Since I have no prior experience I have not much comment. But I like it.

Seafood Ramen

Above is the seafood ramen i ordered. The ramen in Dragon-i is indeed special. The ramen by itself is already very tasty. Im no expert but if I had to guess it would be the elasticity and fullness off the noodles that made it taste nicer.

Two Charbroiled all-beef patties, two strips of bacon, two slices of melted American cheese, onion rings and tangy BBQ sauce on a sesame seed bun.

Hmm...my camera skills memang lembab. Doesnt look appetizing. The pic at the top (got from Carl's Jr website) much nicer. Anyway thats the burger I had my first time at Carl's Junior. That burger ala carte costs approx RM18 @,@

But wah sai...very "tat" oh. Kesedapan giler. The taste of the grilled beef patty memang syok. You definitely cant go wrong with bacon and burger. The onion rings add crispiness and I think is the only vege there. Any meat loving person like myself would definitely enjoy this. The only complain wud be it is a bit dry. I think the Portobello Mushroom Burger would be juicier because of the mushrooms. So that is a must try for me next time.

In a blink of an eye 2007 is over. Last year's resolution is still unaccomplished. Sigh...still single. Perhaps the new year will bring more exciting changes to my life. Well i guess the greatest accomplishment of 2007 would be the creation of this blog. Now i can write my resolutions for 2008 here, and if i forget it will remind me.

1. Get GF
Now this resolution has been left unaccomplished for far too many years. This year i better start taking chances and maybe shake up my attitudes abit. Is there a chronic fear of commitment or rejection lying somewhere deep within me? Is something wrong with me?

2. Get COOL New Job
Now this resolution seems to be running along fine. There might even be significant breakthroughs in the very very near future. ;)

3. Learn The Fine Art Of Italian Cooking
Italian food has always been one of my favourite cuisines. I wanna be able to cook a nice Italian dish that no noob-amateur-nobody can just cook by following easy simple recipes.

4. More Social and Confident
Sometimes I feel that i'm not totally comfortable being myself infront of ppl I don't really know. I guess its like theres something inside me that isnt so sure of myself. I need to change this, and allow my opinions to verbally flow freely. To assert myself when needed, and for me myself to truly belief what a great person I am.

5. Regain My Loss Gym Powers

Location : Along lorong Selamat, perpendicular to Jalan Macalister. Oh...and the CKT stall is now it's own shop. Just abit down where it used to be.

Ladies and gentlemen, the one and only......Lorong Selamat CKT!

Now the price for besar wan is RM7.50 sial. But once in awhile come makan this ok la. The aroma that can only be achieved by the charcoal stove is heavenly. The taste is just at the right strength for me. The aroma and the perfect kuay teow is already enough to make it the best i've ever had. But tambah with the huge succulent prawns, fuuh unbeatable.

Octopus. My first time eating. Looks alot like sotong. Simply steamed and served with chilli. Very nice.

The CKT sold at the same stall was marvellous. The "wok hei" memang kow kow. Really liked it.

Well, at least there was a really nice donut shop there called J & Co. Wah the line long giler. When it was my turn, hafto wait (again!) patiently for the staff to replenish the stock of nicer donuts. But it was worth the wait. The donuts were really nice.

This donut wasn't filling and is easy to eat. The dough is lighter and not as thick which makes every bite flavorful. This is unlike other breads or donuts that always has a part that feels like all your eating is plain bread.

Location : Mizi Bistro, New World Park at Swatow Lane. You cant miss it, New World Park is that big new fancy foodcourt at Swatow.

Wawawiwa...lobster oooh.
RM36++ for a set. One drink, 1 soup of your choice, main course and dessert.

Nooo....I am not Campbell.

For starters I had this mushroom soup. Now this is not your usual taste-like-Campbell soup. They actually cooked this soup themselves. Lovely, actually tastes abit like the one i cooked myself teehee.

And now, ladies and gentlemen...oh my god...ooh la la the grand lobster!

EAT ME!

The Lobster Thermidor...fuuuiyoh..syok giler. I'm guessing its baked la, i dunno. But mm..the smoky aroma of baked seafood shell, fused with the rich cheesy sauce melting perfectly with the oh so grand and wonderful lobster meat...heaven. Well worth the price.
My sources tell me this lobster is called Slipper Lobster, and is the cheaper types around.
Lobster Thermidor refers to the name of the dish. It is creamy , cheesy lobster meat served in its shell.

Another cheesy dish i made!

Butter Garlic Dory and Bacon with Cheesy Sauce

Used the leftover cheese n cream, to make this dish. The sauce has a rather high viscosity . I wonder if adding wine will avoid the sauce from curdling, making it smoother and more pleasing.
Oh well..another OK dish. Hmm...i wonder what to cook next.

Cheesy Creamy Linguine

Ah...finally, a dish im not to embarrassed to post up. After countless failed yucky creamy vomit inducing experiments, im proud to present... my very own Cheesy Creamy Linguine!

All the others i've made were only edible. Always something missing. But this one...this one pass. Tastes good. Generous amount of cheese. Well of course it still aint no high class restaurant level dish. So.... a lot more i need to improve. But this is a decent 3 out of 5 :D

Ah Leng Char Koay Teow

Location : Along jalan Dato Keramat. If your heading towards Komtar its after Padang Brown, right after Esso petrol station. It will be on your left, opposite Honolulu Cafe.

Email has been circulating claiming Ah Leng Char Koay Teow to be the best char koay teow in Penang. One plate of "keh liao" special char koay teow is a whopping RM8.50!
Whats special about Ah Leng is the huge prawns and added lai liu ha. This is definitely a very nice char koay teow, unique for its added lai liu ha.

I personally feel the best Char Koay Teow in Penang is at Lorong Selamat. Koay teow to koay teow, Lorong Selamat is still the winner. When i ask penangites many of them say they dun like Lorong Selamat. Y? Bcuz the Auntie lan si.
WTF......I asked if its the best char koay teow not the best Auntie. Not like i asking them to check out the Auntie, OK? I dun giv a damn how lansi she is! I asked if the char koay teow is the best! So, until now, at least for me, Lorong Selamat still has the best char koay teow in Penang.

But for its great taste and special lai liu ha, Ah Leng Char Koay Teow deserves a

(P.S. : Kimberley Street Char Koay Teow at night also has lai liu ha. But this one nicer)

The night started out just like any night...except for the part where Sze Zan had to wait for 2 hours (so very very sorry). We had korean BBQ at a restoran in hartamas. Guess wats the name?

We start of with part 1 of the eagerly anticipated Sandakan Journeys. The most amazing experience i had in Sandakan is.....

!!!SEAFOOD BAH KUT TEH!!!

This wonderful bah kut teh made the whole trip worth while.

Look at this :

The seafood in Sandakan is really really fresh. It seemed to me that every prawn in Sandakan was big ,fat and succulent. The bah kut teh in Sandakan was very peppery. But what made it so great was the individuality of each bah kut teh. Each of the bah kut teh has absorbed the taste of it's main ingredient. The result is distinct heavenly taste for each and every bah kut teh.

For example my favourite Prawn Bah Kut Teh

This soup...WOW! The flavorful peppery soup had already captured
the taste of the prawns. Each spoonful of prawn soup
was an explosion of psychedelic prawny heaven.

Well here's another one. The fish bah kut teh.

The one on the left...is the classic bak.
The one on the right is just meat ball...nth special here

I can confidently say, Sandakan is where i found the best seafood i've had in my LIFE!
Eating this seafood bah kut teh has left an indelible mark in my gastronomic journeys.

Deserving of the legendary 5 out of 5

Wah the 1st roti...Roti Tisu 786 looks syok oh. So syok until a little girl at the table next to ours (the cute lil girl in yellow in the pic) keep walking over to stare at it. In the end she pestered her parents until they got her a roti tisu. Hoho...

This 2 roti leh..i feel not so nice. but still decoration cantik. Ayam kurma i memang dun like the taste of kurma. The other one, roti galak(apa tu?) taste like vege abit. Tak syok.

Fuuiyoh...ada cheese. On top of the butterflied prawns are capsicum and some chilli. Then a layer of cheese is put on top. It's different, but the taste is pretty normal.

Bah Kut Teh and Mee Suah Kor (night)
Located on the way to Bukit Bendera from Jalan Masjid Negeri. Just before the roundabout. Right beside Maybank and opposite CIMB Bank.

So far of all the bah kut teh i've tasted in Penang, this has got to be the best. The soup is thicker and doesnt taste sweet like most of the horrible Penang style bah kut teh. Oh and it also has Oh Pui (yam rice). And the signboard says it has RABBIT meat as well!!! Must try one day.

The stall beside it has Mee Suah Kor, a type of sharksfin-ish mee suah soup with many "liau". Tastes excellent and very special.

Got nice special food, ok la the bah kut teh...Pass.
Would definitely bring friends here to try.

I rinsed my mouth with my teh peng, having high expectations for this koay teow soup.
With the 1st mouthful i knew, this is the best koay teow soup ive had in Penang.
The soup is thick & flavorful. The fishballs (got 4) were great. So is the minced meat and fish cakes.

What do women want? After all these years im still single. What is wrong with me? Is it me? Is it them? Is it something i do or didnt do? hmmm...

Well i admit i have been too shy to talk to women all the way till 2nd year of uni. Maybe i worship them a bit too much..tee hee. But ever since then it feels as if the women around me are those that are already taken. I mean my 1st love already had a bf. Sigh...we had some great, memorable moments. Has fate decided that i shall forever be surrounded by women that belong to others?

To miss but to never kiss
To love but to never be loved back

Or maybe its just my lifestyle..maybe if i changed that. i mean how am i suppose to meet new ppl? Im not christian i dun go church n do all that gathering singing stuff. I dun go clubbing. I dun mix wif strangers easily. yea.. mebee i shud change that. Try to b more friendly to ppl i dun really know. (ok note to self..do that) Gonna b pretty tough, i can get rather moody.

But i do wonder what women look for in men..ive seen uglier, fatter, dumber, rude assholes , bastards ,gayish-looking and amazingly shorter guys getting chicks. If it isn't an obvious quality it must be the attitude or personality...hmm....some ppl get away wif being assholes so being nice and polite is out. Hmm.. what is it? Dominant and confident? Probably.. or maybe i just haf this aura of desperation. Or mebee i haf the worst timing in the world. hmm... I wonder how those 'spanar' ppl do it..i alwiz found it distasteful. But that might just be my one and only option.

Appetizer : bread and butter , shrimp and salmon salad

Soup : asparagus

Main course : grilled ribeye steak

Dessert : Tea, ice cream and hazelnut cake

Location : Inside Continental hotel, on upper pg road near SS

French cuisine with its small portions is a delightful change of palate from my usual "straight to main course" ways. Separating the meal into several courses allowed me to better enjoy my food. It was a nice change from normal routine. The dishes are well presented,the appetizer was nice, the salmon and shrimp tasted fresh..the salad..well no comment, im no salad fan after all.

I was a little apprehensive with the asparagus soup but it tastes really nice. Now for the main course, the steak was delightful. I ordered it medium done, and it was great .. cooked outer layer with pinkish red meat center. Tender and juicy, perfect. The mash potato at the side also tastes very nice...and is shaped unlike any mash potato i ever had b4. Kinda like benjo egg only tat its mash potato.

Nice place, definitely wud luv to go back again. Can go dating there.

I did not give 5 stars because its not a revolutionary explosion of taste, but it is a nice restaurant with good food and good price.

Telur bungkus, seafood tomyam, kangkung and chicken.
6 rice,4 drinks
4 ppl.
come to about rm50++.

The place is very secluded, along Jalan Datuk Koyah same row as Kayu. Can turn in from penang road (after Odeon if u follow the one way road) The tomyam was nice, if u like it sour then this is the tomyam for u. I think the tomyam wud haf been much redder but we ordered it less spicy so the colour is more clear. The telur bungkus was also very nice...an egg omelette with 'chap' and meat inside. The kangkung to me was just normal and lastly the chicken-sumting was also good with nice 'chap'. Syok.
